Blindness Poster
Blindness is a 2008 film I saw at release, I had written a review for it but never got around finishing it. The movie has a lot of unbelievable and disturbing moments that I never personally believe would happen in such situation. As you finished the review that I have finally completed, you be asked a questioned based on the movie to see what you would do. The story is of an unexplained mass epidemic of Blindness known only as the “White Sickness” – affecting nearly everyone in an unnamed city, and the social breakdown that comes along. The film follows a handful of characters that are among the first to be stricken. With several characters, and assorted others, thrown together by chance. This group bands together to survive by the unexplained good fortune that the doctor’s wife has escaped the blindness.
The movie starts with an Asian man in car who for some reason stops driving and seems in trouble. You find out quickly he has gone blind with no warning. He admits its different then being normally blind. He states that all he sees is white which compared to a normally blind man would only see black. He allows a complete stranger to drive his car and bring him home. This is very unbelievable for two reasons. No one calls 911 out of the few that came to his aid and second, allowed a complete stranger to drive his car and take him home, knowing he can’t see. The Disease slowly spread though out the city as the people who encountered the first man spread it. One by one until eventually the government decides to collect the sick and contain them in a camp guarded and gated off from the rest of the world.
As the groups grows at the camp so does the character development. Julianne Moore who plays the “Doctor’s Wife” seems completely immune to the disease which is never explained why. The movie is very well laid out in the beginning and I can personally believe this could happen if ever such disease came around, until the movie takes a turn for the worse. As the camp finally gets full, a few events happen that ruin the plot. Keep in the mind Julianne Moore character can see, which gives her an advantage over the blind. She has the element of surprise on her side and the only other person who actually knows she can see is her husband (The Doctor).
The camp gets overcrowded and one “Male only” group eventually becomes the villains of the story. First they steal the food from the rest of the camp by treating everyone with a gun but if everyone is blind how can they aim, with no luck they will most likely kill their own. The “Doctors Wife” is among the people and can easily disarm the man and take control of the situation but for some reason does not. Instead she gives a small clue to the gun man that she can see by saying she will never forget his face.
As the blind come to terms with their situation the “Woman with the dark glasses” who is played by Alice Braga seems to sleep with everyone in the camp including Danny Glover and eventually The Doctor who is played by Mark Ruffalo. Moore sees her husband have sex with this woman and comes to terms with it and forgives him based on what I think is because she had seen some form of affection between the two but Moore doesn’t know yet that Braga is also sleeping with Glover. You can kind of consider her the whore of the blind people, even more so since she is introduced in the movie naked. Actually you see her naked more than any other character.
Alice Braga
As the movie goes on, it makes it seem that if mankind was to ever go blind we would apparently become less civilize and more like animals. The villainess group starts to charge people for the food by accepting any kind of tradable like jewelry, money and so forth. Once people run out of stuff to trade the group decides the only other way to get food is for all the women of the other groups give them self’s as exchange for the food or basically sex for food. Julianne has the opportunity to take matters into her own hands. Instead she builds up a group of women actually considering going fourth with this disturbing act. It takes a woman, who is beaten to death during the orgy to get Moores characters mind strait and actually kills the man who was the gunner in the beginning. After stabbing the guy with a scissor, his gun falls on the floor and the accountant who is the 2nd man in charge who is played by Maury Chaykin grabs the gun and starts blasting at everything that makes a noise and kills 2 of his own men. She escapes with one women they where raping at the time.
With in minutes another woman decides to retaliate out of fear and try’s to put the basement floor on fire to kill off Chaykin and his remaining men. These characters are shown not to be smart at all because now the whole building is on fire. As the building burns down they escape with Moore leading them out of the building. She realizes that they are no guards and that the gates are not lock anymore. They come to realize that the disease has spread.
Ruined City
As they roam around the ruin city, a group of 5 to 6 people which broke off the remaining survivors of the fire decided to go on to the wife’s house where she can protect them after she saw how humanity has becoming nothing but animals that will kill to survive and not even her eye site can save her from the mobs of blind people who are listening and feeling for food in the city. As time goes on they come to be a family of sorts and as a predictable happy ending approaches, the Asian who was the first to have the sickness gets his eye site back which closes to the conclusion that eventually everyone else will get there’s back and the Credits role.
The movie had a set of good actors and well laid out plot but what went wrong was when the story gave the characters decisions to do the right thing, even when the answer where obvious. Moore character did the opposite of everything that is right. So based on this entire movie, when women have a choice they make the wrong once and both “the gunner” who is played by Gael Garcia Bernal and Alice Braga, who are both Hispanic are both portrayed as whores or bastards and that diseases come from Asians who drive Hondas.
