This was originally intended to be a topic on a premiere show I was producing and hosting that was so post to air on YouTube on the same day as “New Moon” release. In the end, it was never recorded because of disagreements on when to record, so instead I will be writing about it. Me and Wilson Meredith on the daily basis have debates; our entire friendship is almost completely based off of arguing with each other. Once in awhile we debate about the book series Twilight. 90% of the time I lose thought and completely ramble on the topic and make an ass of myself. I find it difficult to argue on an instant messenger client.
I try to explain that I am not a hater nor do I hate the author of Twilight. I have a very high standard of what I believe is good. It takes something extraordinary to impress me or make me agree on the hype some have gained. Now I give credit when its dew and as an artist I find my own work to be below standards compare to other designers. The Twilight series, which has spawned 4 books and the 5th on the way, I feel are very generic, I don’t care for things that have been done before. Meyer says that the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream and I honestly can say that 1000s or even millions of young women have had dreams like that, I give her credit for pursuing it into a book and I’m sure fans have a lot of love for her sister for pushing her to do so, but this doesn’t take away from the fact that such stories where around and have been published before the series came around.
Recently I made a comment that Vampire Diaries is a rip off of twilight but was eventually told that it also is a book, even more so I found out that it’s a huge series of books that have been around before Twilight. This shows that Summit Entertainment showed Hollywood that blowing shit up is not the only way to make money but let’s stick to the topic at hand. There are many books of the same genre. So why do people hype this series, as well as hyping up this author as if she and her books created the idea of romantic vampire novels.
Vampire Kisses, Marked, Vampire Diaries, and Vampire Academy are books that came around before and after the twilight series, now I don’t know which are better or worse because that’s all up for debate, everyone has their taste in books but people seem to forget they were others before twilight. Stephen Meyer is a good author, there’s no doubt about that, she has caught the hearts of many young teen girls with her books but remember she isn’t like the Beatles who revolutionized music and started a whole new genre of music nor is she like the people behind Jurassic Park who seamlessly integrated CGI with life action that revolutionized the movie industry, remember she is one of many authors that help create the genre.
My closing comment would have been different on the show, but with much thought I will say this. In the end, at times I wish and hope people would see things the way Wilson does. He doesn’t fall for the hype, he doesn’t let the media sell him on something, in the end all he cares about is the enjoyment, which is what everyone should do. These books, games shouldn’t divide us, they are so post to entertain us, which is what I’m sure Wilson would say and I agree, I’m looking forward to seeing New Moon in theaters and none of this fan boy crap is going to ruin that but before I go, I would like to say this also. If Meyer somehow stumbles on to this page, I would like to say this to her. Don’t let the big guys on top tell you how to sell your book, you shouldn’t have to hype up your own work, if you have confidence in your self and your story, word of mouth is all you will need and this article isn’t just towards twilight, this is to all the over hyped media that’s out there, Halo, Scarface, and so many others. One thing me and Wilson did agree on, Titanic wasn’t hyped, it was word of mouth that made it the biggest grossing movie of all time, just something to think about.
