Playstation 3 Slim Reaction

I woke up today around 2 in the afternoon from a long night and I get on the internet and it’s on every video game website, the Playstation 3 slim announced and the $299 price cute. The fan boys are screaming all over the forums and I’m thinking who cares. First off I already own a playstation 3 and it’s was the last S.k.u. with backward compatible. I go on gametrailers.com and watch the conference and see Kazuo Hirai introduce the slim. Now my first reaction was it’s nothing special but of course it goes on to announce the price cut. The Playstation 3 and the Slim will both run at $299 worldwide. So finally Sony is showing some competiveness after a 3 year long wait but they still making a mistake. If you want to get rid of the older model’s (discontinue Fat PS3) the smartest move would be to make it a lower price than the current release, with that people will buy and empty out the stock. Instead they price match the new and the old. So my question is who’s going to want to buy the older playstation when they can wait less than a month to get a Slim? I’m sorry but that is the worse marketing I’ve ever seen.

With all the Playstation fans screaming the console wars are over, they seem to forget and I have no doubt in my mind Microsoft has something up their sleeves with their upcoming conference. With the rumors of them discontinuing the pro and bringing in the Elite as the leading console, I don’t see much happening with Sony. Senior news editor of Gamespot.com Tor Thorsen said “Though it lacks the Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm integration the 360 will get later this year, the PS3 offers direct access to those sites via its Web browser.” I look at his guy and wonder why I don’t have his job and does he even own a Playstation 3. The PS3 browser is the worse feature on the console. It’s poorly made and slow and compared to any other browser on a PC it’s pointless to use. It’s not really a selling point for the console and even more so if you’re playing online chances are you have a computer at home with a real browser. Xbox 360 isn’t giving you a browser, its intergrading Live with Twitter and Facebook. You can seamlessly go back and forth through Facebook, Twitter, the market place, and even during gaming. You cannot use the browser during game play on the playstation 3.

He makes a point that Sony has caught up in two areas. The price and exclusives, which I agree on because most the games that I want are exclusive to Playstation 3 and to name a few Drake Fortune 2, God of War 3 and Final Fantasy 13 Versus. He also argues about paying for live and that the Playstation comes with built in Wi-Fi. I say this all the time you get what you payed for. Live is still a over all better experience then PSN is as of now, if you want to know why I think this click here. I do agree with him that the Wi-Fi is completely over priced ($100) by Microsoft but I like the fact that it’s an option other then it being forced on you. No one knows how much the Wi-Fi price is, in the overall price of the console. Let me ask you this, if Sony said the Wi-Fi cost $50 bucks, wouldn’t you rather have the option to buy a PS3 for $250 and if you wanted later on, you would get the Wi-Fi for the $50 bucks or do you mind paying for something you may or may not use? I don’t know about you but I like options.

My personal opinion on the Slim, it’s ugly. It’s not sleek and polished like the original. It doesn’t have any of flash card bays, and they lowered the amount of USB ports. You can’t install Linux anymore which was awesome for tech enthusiast and I wouldn’t purchase one at launch. If anyone remembers the PS2 Slim you know what I’m talking about. They should have announced a universal update that will add BC to all PS3 including the Slim. I feel that every time Sony brings a new S.k.u they remove more instead of giving more. Compared to the original Playstation 3 60gig model, the slim is a knockoff. So tell me what you think in the comment box below.
