Sonic Returns To 2D

Every gamer in the world has at least played one Sonic game in there life. May it be some of the newer once or the older Genesis games. Like many fans I believe that since Sonic has transcended into the 3D format it has never been the same. A lot of fans including myself have been hoping for something like 2D meets 3D or something similar to Street Fighter 4. Even more so since Street Fighter 4 did so well critically, why wouldn’t any other developer follow Capcom to it’s glory?

Well today a few hours ago Sega put up a trailer for its up coming project “Needlemouse” which was unveil to be a New 2D Sonic game. The teaser doesn’t show much but tells us the most important things which is Sonic is finally going back to its Genesis roots. The trailer starts off with a new Sega logo but with the old school SAAAAAAAAA…..GAAAAAAA….. Lol

I just remembered a few years back I saw wallpaper that showed exactly how I imagined the game being before this announcement, the artist is a Deviant Art member called Orioto. I personally hope Sega has seen this mans work and take from it and for 2 simple reasons, one it looks awesome and two its fucking awesome and you can’t disagree once you it checked it out down below. Also check out the rest of his work, he is a really talented artist and also does alot of other game related work. Click on the imagine to get the full version or Click Here to go to his profile.

Anyways after the small but welcoming reminisces with the logo, you see Sonic flash by the screen with some of the original coin sound effects with text zooming in and flashing by with words such as  “Speed Returns” and “2D Adventure”. I had to post this up before I went to bed because I am such a Sonic fan. Sonic was my Mario since I was never a Nintendo fan but anyways watch the trailer down below and tell me what you think of Sonic returning back to where it all started.

[edited] I forgot to mention, I love the music in the trailer. The drums get me hyped up and as they get faster you just can’t look away.  Don’t forget to rate down below.

Don’t get your hopes up. Sonic Unleashed already proved that modern Sonic Team is just as incompetent with 2D Sonic as they are with 3D.

What Team sonic did with sonic Unleashed was transitions from third person to side scrolling and even with that, 3/4th of the game was 3rd person and that terrible Were-hog idea. Personally I can’t see how anyone can mess up on a 3D side scrolling game. The Concept is restricting unlike 3D and the whole objective is to get from one side of the screen to the other. With at lease a boss at the end, doesn’t even need a story. The original Sonic games was just, defeat Robotnic and save a bunch of squirrels and that was the plot that caught millions of fans.

The only other thing they really have to work out is level design and with that said, I’m not hyped, I just don’t see it being to hard for it to not possibly be good and just the small logo that shows at the end of teaser kinda gives the idea that they really are going back to the old days and with all these 2D games coming out and showing that there as great or even at times better then 3D, why not look forward?

To be perfectly honest, I think even Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) could’ve been a great Sonic game given the proper time to refine and polish the game. Some of those glitches were just unacceptable and it seems like all the bad design flaws come from the fact that they don’t have enough time to make a lengthy or deep enough game without adding these silly gimmicks that no one enjoys.

Personally, I’m stoked that they’re still making new Sonic games at all. I can look past the flaws and still get a good time out of the 2006 game and Unleashed. I’m just not expecting this next one to be much better than the last. Hearing that it’s being built from the ground up just doesn’t inspire much confidence in me when the last few times that they said that, we ended up getting broken mechanics that USED to work.

But with that said, yay! New Sonic!

I completely agree with you on polishing the games and that some glitches are just unforgivable but I personally just believe Sonic was never meant to be 3D and never will. Since it first went 3D on Sega Genesis. Like why ruin something, ever heard don’t fix what aint broke. Some people will argue that Sonic Adventures on Dreamcast was the best but I beg the fucking differ but then again everyone to there own opinion.

I think sonic has been dead since Sonic and Knuckles and with this new 2D, there should be less hassle for them not to be able to polish it out. I mean how hard is to make a AI for a enemy that can go only up and down or left and right on a screen. If this game is remotely unpolished or unplayable because of glitches or AI, then I guess we will never see another good Sonic game since it would seem they have a problem even making the most simplistic style of games.

While not that great now, back then the Sonic Adventure games were definitely great efforts. Take away the non-Sonic/Shadow stages and we have some pretty decent 3D Sonic games. But basically, I don’t think 3D ruined Sonic, just that they don’t seem to put in the same effort that they did until Sonic & Knuckles. Just look at the 2D games on the Game Gear, post-Sonic & Knuckles: all terrible. Sonic Adventure was the first decent Sonic game in years.

In my opinion, they tend to make one or two great games, then try to recreate the same great experience but every game there after, the games are marginally worse than the last until it becomes so bad that they reboot with another great game. Could it be this next one that reinvigorates the series? I don’t know, but I hope not. Because that would mean the end of 3D Sonic forever. Just because it hasn’t worked out well so far doesn’t mean they should give up. I’m still looking for my Sonic Adventure 3.

I think 3D ruined Sonic, theirs just some games that weren’t meant to leave the 2D arena. Example, every street fighter that tried to go 3D has failed. It just wasn’t meant to go 3D, I even think Mortal Kombat hasn’t been the same since it’s left 2D and I’m sure your agree with me on that. Some things just shouldn’t change. The effort was good but I think they hit a bench mark with Sonic Adventure and they cant push it to the levels of the older games and if they have, the results haven’t been stellar or at lease what fans were not expecting. Games like Contra, Sonic, Street Fighter, and other 2D games just shouldn’t make the jump, with the few acceptations such as Metroid and Mario. 2D games are more limited in what you can do with them, and it gives developers more incentive to make more out of less.

Its like in Films, you go and see this hyped up film and you read it cost 200 million and got crazy special effect and blah bah and you go and see it and you come to relies this movie sucks but then you go a week later to see a movie that cost almost 1/3rd the other movie cost, it got unknown actors and it ends up being a great film and its because when you give some one less like a film director or a game developer they usually take whats given to them and MacGyver the shit out of it and make it into something grand.

So hopefully them going back to 2D will force them to push harder, since more is expected from them in a generation that is all about HD and High end Graphics.

Well i think sega aint pushing 3d sonic like Nintendo did with Mario and Metroid. It’s like they put Sonic in a 3d game and rush the game, have some loops, some speed and I think thats the game. If they actually took time like nintendo did then they can make a great sonic 3d game like 1 and 2. Keep the story simple and keep the established characters and go, no wolf shit. All day time sonic and focus on a simple storytelling and focus on even better loops in shyt. Make me feel like I’m on a rollercoaster and I’m sonic running mad fast, running from a big ass avalanche or doing tricks on a snowboard. I can’t wait for the 2d game but I think they still can do a great 3d game. Sonic 2, 3 and sonic and knuckles (especially s3 locked with s&n) are my favs lol
